Walks Around Brontë Country
Those three remarkable sisters – Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë – who lived, worked and wrote in Haworth during the 1830 and '40s, transformed what had, until then, been a typical South Pennine industrial village, into a world-famous literary shrine. The little Parsonage – now the Brontë Museum – the church (rebuilt since the reverent Patrick was there), the cobbled Main Street with the Black Bull Inn where Branwell drank himself to an early grave, but above all the wild Pennine moors that form such an evocative backcloth to the novels and poems, have attracted literary pilgrims from all over the world. Little wonder that the walk to the Brontë Falls or to Top Withens, the supposed setting of Wuthering Heights, is one of the few places in the UK where signposts are in Japanese.
Each book contains ten walks chosen by a local expert, all walks are six miles or less and all stay below 1,500 feet. Each walk is fully described with its own easy-to-follow map and points of interest along the way.
